Kazakhstan: on the rise
Kazakhstan is the world’s largest landlocked country, and the ninth largest in the world, with an area of 2,724,900 square kilometres. The capital is Astana, where it was moved in 1997 from Almaty, the country’s largest city. Kazakhstan was the last of the Soviet republics to declare independence during the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
The economy of Kazakhstan is the largest economy in Central Asia. It possesses enormous oil reserves as well as minerals and metals. It also has considerable agricultural potential with its vast steppe lands accommodating both livestock and grain production, as well as developed space infrastructure, which took over all launches to the International Space Station from the Space Shuttle.
The GDP per capita has strongly dropped from around 13,000 USD in 2013 to 7,500 USD in 2016, mainly because of the decline in oil prices, but is projected to grow in the next few years.
How to find your Kazakhstan agent or distributor?
Most businesses have their headquarters either in Astana or in Almaty. In retail, Magnum Cash&Carry is one of the largest in a difficult market with many local outlets closing. Grocery retailer chains such as Ramstore, Gourmet, Macrocenter and Carrefour are expected to continue to expand. For business-to-business, the distribution structure very much depends on the industry.
To find the right agent or distributor, it is important speak either Russian or Kazakh. Also knowledge of the local culture is important.
